Visiting Italian Companies and their novelties - part 2

A Slice of Tradition: Visiting Berti Knives in Scarperia, Tuscany

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Tuscany, the town of Scarperia has been synonymous with knife-making since the 14th century. On a recent journey through this historic region, we had the pleasure of visiting Coltellerie Berti, a renowned artisanal knife manufacturer that embodies the enduring craftsmanship and elegance of Italian tradition.

Where Every Knife Tells a Story

As soon as we stepped into the Berti workshop, we were greeted by an atmosphere that blends precision with passion. Each knife is not just an object; it’s a legacy, forged by the same artisan from start to finish, a practice Berti has fiercely preserved. In the first image, we see a neatly arranged set of knives, their bright red handles and flawless blades resting on white padding, a clear sign of meticulous handwork and care.

“Ogni Cibo ha il suo Coltello”

Translated as “Every food has its knife,” this phrase emblazoned on the wall of the showroom captures the soul of Berti’s philosophy. The elegant display of knives in beautifully crafted wooden cases tell the story of Berti knives: from carving to filleting, slicing cheese or vegetables, Berti knives are tailored tools, each one shaped to elevate the dining and cooking experience.

A Museum of Blades

Walking through the display cases felt like stepping into a kind of curated museum of blades: a full collection of traditional folding knives, each with its own unique handle, curve, and finish. Horn, wood, and even gold-accented pieces were among the many styles, all reflecting centuries of Tuscan knife-making tradition.

The Art of the Horn Handle

One of the most captivating elements of Berti knives is their horn handles, each one a unique, natural work of art. Sourced responsibly and worked entirely by hand, these handles showcase the deep skill and sensitivity of Berti’s craftsmen. No two horn handles are alike; the grain, colour, and curvature vary, making each knife a one-of-a-kind heirloom. Shaping and polishing horn is a delicate process requiring both patience and precision, and at Berti, it’s done with reverence for the material and the centuries-old tradition behind it.

A Fine Dining Experience: the Berti Way

Perhaps the most unforgettable part of the visit was the meal. At a local Tuscan restaurant, guests are offered a box of handmade Berti steak knives to choose from, before their meal. It’s not just about cutting into your steak, it’s about engaging with a tradition, respecting the ingredients, and making dining an act of intentionality!
