How important is being a Team player.

(as published on the Italian Chamber of Commerce Magazine)

Do you remember the opening words of "About a boy" when the Protagonist started saying that "every man is an island" justifying his eternal status as a selfish and carefree single, disputing what has been claimed, on the other hand, by the English poet John Donne: “No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main”.

In private life everyone can decide to be a small kingdom that makes decisions for itself and pays the consequences but, what happens in the workplace?

After several years in the job market, we can all say that no one is irreplaceable and that there are no more or less important jobs than others. And this is precisely because the concept of a Team is based on working together, having common goals, and performing as a team, not as an individual.

But how to start establishing a human relationship with a new colleague?

Human beings generally have an innate need to be part of something: a family, a group of friends, a culture or a country. The same is true in the workplace. When people feel they belong in the workplace, they are more productive, motivated, engaged and 3.5 times more likely to contribute to their maximum potential, according to research at the Center for Talent Innovation.

To better understand the emotional impact of belonging and, likewise, feeling excluded - let's look at a study by EY Belonging Barometer, which surveyed 1,000 employed American adults. Research results confirmed that exclusion is a growing problem. We found that over 40% of respondents feel physically and emotionally isolated in the workplace.

So how can companies connect more effectively with employees and help them feeling part of the business community? Our survey results indicate a simple solution: establish more opportunities for colleagues to engage with each other.

39% of respondents feel the greatest sense of belonging when colleagues confront each other, both personally and professionally. By reaching and recognizing their employees on a personal level, companies and leaders can significantly improve the employee experience by making their people feel valued and connected.

Tablo is a growing but still small company and is a bit like a big family. Often, we organize brunches, table football evenings, aperitifs, Sunday roasts. Our staff currently has an Italian majority, and it is therefore a duty to try not to isolate those who do not speak our language or have different traditions and habits.

We always try to involve the staff in various initiatives, we celebrate both Christmas and the Chinese New Year and, as a team, we are also very committed on the charity front.

In fact, Tablo has always had a partnership with The Italian Women’s Association, a charity registered and recognized in Hong Kong which, through the organization of events, is involved in raising funds to be donated to various Hong Kong charities. Each month, Tablo pledges to donate 20% of its online proceeds to the association.
Another very important project is Missione Possibile, a non-profit missionary, humanitarian association whose projects aim to protect fundamental human rights such as education, adequate medical care, and freedom of thought. This month, for a charity football match, we will sponsor the lucky draw!

It is now very common even in the Belpaese to see large and small companies starting to promote corporate volunteering which has many advantages. One above all - it improves the atmosphere in the office, with better satisfied and hence less frustrated employees. And that’s not the end to it! But not only! Volunteering is a strategy to increase the corporate reputation, the Image of the company externally, which by showing sensitivity to a sustainable development policy shows an assumption of social responsibility, very useful for internal and external communication.

In the future, therefore, we hope that this trend will become more and more popular! And while our team prepares to grow and face the Christmas period and the opening of a new store, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
